Treatment of Osteoporosis
STAND TALL STAND STRONG
Osteoporosis is a silent disease that affects millions of Americans over the age of fifty. What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a reduction in bone mass that makes the skeletal system fragile and at a great risk for fracture. Proper screening is essential in the treatment of this problem. A simple, noninvasive, pain free bone density test should be a part of every woman’s general check up after age fifty. Risk factors include: family history, gender, age, ethnicity, body type, corticosteroid use, high intake of alcohol, and cigarette smoking.
Weight Bearing Exercises Programs
The triad of treatment for osteoporosis includes proper diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, pharmacological intervention, as prescribed by your doctor, and a proper exercise program which includes 30 minutes of moderately intense weight bearing exercise. Other weight bearing exercises that emphasize muscle toning, posture, and balance should be incorporated into your routine. As we get older, it becomes especially important to sustain optimum flexibility and muscle strength to prevent or delay impaired motor function and maintain mobility. Weight Bearing Exercise programs should be under the supervision of your doctor and a licensed physical therapist.
